A Humane Dog Breeder

 History of the Havanese Breed

These little gems originated from Cuba in the early 1600's and were named after the capital of city of Havana.  The Blanquito de la Habana (Havana Silk Dog), or Havanese, were the primary lap dog for the wealthy aristocrats up until the Cuban War of 1959.  The Havanese were almost wiped from existence but those who were able to flee, brought their companions with them to America.  They have made a strong comeback thanks to American fanciers and refugees who perpetuated and preserved the breed.  Now, the Havanese are popular companion dogs all across the globe.

All About This Wonderful Breed

The Havanese have a playful, alert friendly demeanor, and are highly intelligent with a sweet, non-aggressive disposition.  They are "velcro" dogs and become very attached to their people.  Watching them walk with a spring in their step can be amusing, as well as playing!

Havanese are small in stature and are slightly longer than tall.  They average 8.5 to 11.5 inches tall and average between 9-15 pounds.  Havanese are hypoallergenic, have a silky double coat and curled tail, high-set floppy ears, and intelligent almond shaped eyes.

They come in a "rainbow" of colors and patterns, each one unique!  Their coats are ever changing, often lightening or fading through-out the years.  The biggest change in color is from birth to their first year.  True white and chocolate are the rarest of all the Havanese colors.
